The hobbit house – built in four month with only a chisel and a hammer

Posted: 21 Sep 2011 10:17 AM PDT

When you look at this fantastic hobbit house, as it is called by the neighbors, you probably think that it took a long and elaborate process to build it and a team of architects. You're probably going to be impressed to find out that the house was actually built by the owners themselves, actually by Simon Dale with some help from his father-in-law.

He decided to build a house for his wife and kids and they wanted it to be in the middle of nature. So they chose this location. The owner of the woods found out but he was happy to have someone live there to take care of the forest so the family didn't even have to pay for the land they were building the house on.

The owners had to build this home from scratch. At the beginning, Simon Dale only had a chisel, a chainsaw and a hammer. Nevertheless, he had a dream and he was decided to make it come true. The family moved to the hillside in Wales and Mr Dale started digging. In just a few moths he managed to build this fully sustainable house with a budged of only £3,000. He had no carpentry or architecture knowledge so it wasn't easy. There was a lot of stress and exhaustion, but it was always followed by fun and satisfaction.

As for the materials, the owners used scrap from wood for the floors and pallets for the walls. At the beginning, Mr. Dale needed some help from his father-in-law who helped him put up the timber frame and then the roof. As soon they had a shelter, his wife and kids moved inside while Mr Dale continued the work. The roof has a layer of straw bales for insulation. It's then covered with plastic that makes it waterproof. On top of everything, earth was placed.

The materials used to build the house were gathered from skips, builder's yards and donations. The walls are covered with lime plaster instead of cement. The house also has a compost toilet, a fridge that's cooled by the air from under the building's foundation and solar panels on the roof. This is what makes the house fully sustainable and part of the nature. The running water comes from a nearby spring.

The house has a very low impact on the impact and it allows harmony to be created between nature and the people living there.The hobbit house was built in 2005. After that, Mr. Dale moved on to his next project, the first home in the Lammas Village project. It has a design similar to the hobbit house.{found on dailymail and pics by simondale}

Reclaimed slate clock: both fun and functional

Posted: 21 Sep 2011 09:49 AM PDT

I know plenty of people that can't make up their minds when it comes to choosing a clock. They want something fun and modern, but they also want it to match their décor. It's not easy to do both. Fortunately we found a very special clock design that might just work. This reclaimed slate clock is definitely something different.

reclaimed slate clock Reclaimed slate clock: both fun and functional

The clock is actually made of reclaimed pieces of wood and slate. The idea is very simple. Just make a square and add a piece of wood on one of the side that will become the bottom side. You'll be able to put the chalk there. Add the clock mechanism in the middle and the clock in done. It's actually a very fun project to do by yourself. But if you prefer to leave the hard work for someone else, just buy the complete version for $95.

This is a very fun and functional clock because you can actually write on it. This way you can use as a blackboard to write your schedule or the to do things and little reminders. Every time you'll look at the clock to see the time you'll also see the writing. It's very useful. Moreover, it's very fun, especially if you have kids, They'll probably love to write and draw on it. The clock measures 12″ L x 12.75″ W x 2.4″ D; approx. 5 lbs, uses 1 AA battery and you'll also get one piece of chalk and a sawtooth wall-mounting bracket.

This small but very interesting and unusual residence is located in Viana de Castelo, Portugal. It was designed and built by Alfredo Resende Arquitectos and João Resende, José Oliveira. The panoramic views were definitely a very important factor when the owners bought this piece of land. The little area situated on top of the mountain, protected from north winds and with such beautiful landscape looked like it was almost begging for a house. The residence sits on a platform created by the existing stone walls that define the land. The stone walls were very beautiful and worth to be preserved. However, some of them were almost ruins so they had to be rebuilt.

The house has a very simple and geometrical design and it seems to be part of the landscape. It has large windows and a balcony, strategically chosen to offer the owners to opportunity to admire the incredible surroundings. There's also a pool that is connected to a garden. The whole structure seems so historically beautiful. It's part of the landscape and that area wouldn't be the same without it. It's like the house chose its own land.{found on archdaily}

Retro bling penthouse interior design by LecaroliMited

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 11:56 PM PDT

What you see here is a very special penthouse located in Berlin. The residence sits on 400 sq meters and it has a very special interior design. It was created by LecaroliMited, an architectural office known for its surprising and flamboyant designs. It was founded in 2005 by Oskar Kohnen and Fabian Freytag and it never ceases to amaze us ever since. The owners of this lace wanted to maintain and open floor plan. In order to do that, the architects working at this project decided to create a series of boxed structures.

Penthouse in Berlin Retro bling penthouse interior design by LecaroliMited

The residence is split into two levels and the overall interior design is a combination of retro and glamorous elements that apparently have nothing in common but that combined give the results that you see here. I order to create a dynamic and surprising décor, the interior was filled with a multitude of mirrors. They were made on site out of small and non uniform pieces of bespoke custom painted glass. Each piece was split by hand. The mirrored surfaces help create different perspectives from different areas of the house. It's like living in a permanent illusion.

Besides these elements, there are also interesting furniture choices, custom designed for the residence. They feature vibrant colors and bright fabrics. One particularly interesting piece is the dining table. It's a modular and adjustable piece that has multiple configurations. It can be 6 meters long and from there it only gets shorter.{pics by Gerrit Engel and found on lecarolimited}

I love this interior style mirrors are often used to increase the space but as you can see the mirror is not flat and purposefully flawed so it looks more like the water surface and the angles cast the colours in a random way. It's really quite unique. Something for Stylish Interiors
